The Alabama Tandem Weekend (ATW) is three-day cycling event for tandem enthusiasts that is being held on April 13-15, 2018, in Scottsboro, AL. Scottsboro is a small town along the Tennessee River in Northeast Alabama that is located about 45 miles West of Huntsville, AL, and 55 miles from Chattanooga, TN. The town is famously known as the Unclaimed Baggage Center of the world (https://www.unclaimedbaggage.com/). The ATW event will kick off with a reception on Thursday night, April 12, 2018, at the Hampton Inn & Suites Scottsboro. Rides are scheduled each day. The rides on Friday and Sunday will start from the Hampton Inn & Suites Scottsboro and the rides on Saturday will start from Stevenson Middle School, located in Stevenson, AL. Riders will have the opportunity to visit Cathedral Caverns State Park (http://www.alapark.com/cathedral-caverns-state-park), Russell Cave National Monument (https://www.nps.gov/ruca/index.htm), the campus of the University of the South (http://www.sewanee.edu/) and Rock Animal Zoo (http://www.al.com/living/index.ssf/2012/10/post_41.html). The event will conclude following a ride on Sunday morning.

Registration

There is a $50 fee per tandem team to cover administration costs, insurance, SAG support and other essentials. Lodging, meals and other expenses are the responsibility of the rider/participants. Each rider must, however register individually ($25ea) and sign the online waiver.

Lodging

The host hotel is the Hampton Inn & Suites Scottsboro, 24747 John T Reid Pkwy, Scottsboro, AL 35768. Rooms can be booked at discounted rate through March 22, 2018, at http://hamptoninn.hilton.com/en/hp/groups/personalized/H/HSVSBHX-ATW-20180412/index.jhtml?WT.mc_id=POG. Room rates include a hot breakfast. Camping is also available nearby at the Jackson County Park and Marina. This site offers both RV camping and primitive camping. All transient spots have full hookups with consist of 30/50 amp service, water, cable, sewer, and Wi-Fi. The Park is located at 2302 County Park Road, Scottsboro, AL 35769, (256) 574-4719 (office).

Ride/Route Info

The roads will NOT be marked. Riders can download course files for their GPS-enabled bike computers and smart phones from the ATW 2018 event page at https://ridewithgps.com/events/49090-alabama-tandem-weekend-atw-2018. Copies of cue sheets and route maps will be available at the hospitality room at the host hotel, as well as at the Riders Meeting prior to the rides each day. SAG support will be provided to assist with minor mechanical issues and/or transport riders and bicycles back to the ride start location if necessary. Contact info for the SAG support will be provided at the Riders Meeting. Riders Meetings will be held each day 10 minutes prior to the published start of the ride.

 

Day 1 – Friday, April 13, 2018

  • Three route options, 42, 59 or 71 miles, riding to Cathedral Caverns State Park (59-mile option) in Woodville, AL, or to New Hope, AL (71-mile option).
  • Roll out at 9:00 a.m. CDT
  • Start From: Hampton Inn & Suites (host hotel)

Day 2 – Saturday, April 14, 2018

  • Three route options, 38, 59 or 63 miles, riding through Crow Creek Valley to Russell Cave National Monument (59-mile option) in Stevenson, AL, or to the University of the South All Saints Chapel and Sewanee Memorial Cross (63-mile option) in Sewanee, TN.
  • Roll out at 9:30 a.m. CDT
  • NEW Starting Point! Stevenson Middle School, 701 Kentucky Ave, Stevenson, AL 35772

Day 3 – Sunday, April 15, 2018

  • One route option, 29 miles, riding through rural Jackson County, AL to the Rock Animal Zoo and Bellefonte Nuclear Power Plant in Hollywood, AL.
  • Roll out at 8:00 a.m. CDT
  • Start From: Hampton Inn & Suites  (host hotel)


Snacks and refreshments will be available at select rest stops each day (will be announced at riders meetings), as well as for purchase at the convenience stores designated as rest stops along the routes. Some of the stores do NOT accept credit cards, so make sure to bring cash with you. We encourage you to patron the stores if you make use of their restrooms.

Rider Safety

Traffic laws apply to persons riding bicycles (cyclists have been ticketed in the area for failure to stop at stop signs). In the State of Alabama, persons riding bicycles upon a roadway shall ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable and shall not ride more than two abreast except on paths or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles. For your safety and others maintain control of your bicycle at all times. When passing other riders, stay in the right lane and call out “passing”.
